The keypad menu is a 1990s solution

The IVR tree exists because early phone systems could recognise a keypress and nothing else. Every constraint of that format — the enumerated options, the nesting, the "please listen carefully as our options have changed" — is a workaround for a technical limitation that no longer exists.

Callers hate it, and more importantly they abandon it. The hang-ups happen in the menu, before any agent or queue, which means they do not appear in your abandoned-call statistics at all. Most businesses have no idea how many people give up at option four.

What replaces it

The agent answers and asks an open question: what can we help you with? The caller says "I want to know if my order shipped" or "there's a leak and nobody came yesterday" and is routed accordingly — or, increasingly often, simply answered without being routed at all.

That last part is where the second saving lives. A meaningful share of menu traffic exists only to reach someone who will read out a piece of information the agent could have provided directly.

The last row matters operationally. Changing a keypad tree means re-recording prompts and remapping the tree. Changing this means editing a sentence, which means it actually gets kept up to date.

This is usually not a phone system replacement. The agent answers first and then transfers into your existing PBX, cloud telephony or call centre platform on the extension it decides is right.

Those become direct answers and never reach a human at all.

What if the caller mumbles or the line is bad?

It asks once for clarification, and if recognition fails again it falls back to a short keypad menu or routes to a default human queue. It does not loop. Repeatedly asking someone to repeat themselves is the single most infuriating failure mode in voice systems and we design explicitly to avoid it.

Can it handle callers speaking Hindi or Marathi?

Yes, natively, which is a genuine advantage over keypad menus — supporting a second language in a traditional IVR means building and maintaining an entire parallel tree, whereas here it is a configuration.
