ANPR is a mature technology internationally. India adds specific complications, and a system tuned elsewhere underperforms here.

The installation decides the accuracy
More ANPR deployments fail on physical installation than on software. The camera must see the plate square-on, not at a steep angle, which means mounting height and distance are calculated rather than guessed.
Vehicles should be slow or stopped at the read point — a speed breaker or the barrier itself does this naturally. A camera trying to read a plate on a vehicle at 30 km/h needs a much shorter exposure and better lighting to avoid motion blur.
Night operation needs IR illumination, without exception. Ambient gate lighting is never adequate and the read rate collapses after dark, which clients discover in week one if it was skipped to save cost.
What the system does with a plate number
Reading the plate is the start. The logic afterwards is where the operational value sits.
- Whitelist and barrier control. Registered vehicles open the gate without stopping; everything else waits for a guard.
- Duration and billing. Entry paired with exit gives parking duration and a charge, with no ticket to lose.
- Expected-arrival matching. A truck's plate checked against today's inbound schedule, with an alert on anything unexpected.
- Blacklist alerting. A vehicle you have flagged triggers a notification rather than silently entering.
- Dwell-time reporting. How long trucks spend inside your yard, which is often a surprise to the people running it.
Integrating with the barrier and the rest of the site
Barrier control is a relay signal, and most boom barriers accept a dry contact input. The integration itself is simple; the safety logic around it needs care — a barrier that closes on a vehicle causes damage and a dispute, so loop detectors or a secondary sensor stay in the loop regardless of what the camera thinks.
For societies, we typically connect to the visitor management system so a resident's vehicle and a guest's vehicle follow different paths. For yards, the plate log pushes into the ERP against the gate pass or purchase order.
Everything runs locally. There is no reason for vehicle movement data to leave the site, and gates need to work when the internet does not.

Does it work for two-wheelers?
Yes, but usually with a dedicated camera. Motorcycle plates are smaller, mounted lower, often at an angle and frequently obscured by a rider's leg or a saddle bag. A camera positioned for cars reads them poorly. Sites with heavy two-wheeler traffic — most Indian societies and factories — get a second lower-mounted camera aimed at that plate position, which brings read rates to a comparable level.
Can it check whether a vehicle is stolen or has valid insurance?
Not directly, and be sceptical of vendors who claim it. Access to VAHAN and equivalent government databases is restricted and not generally available to private ANPR deployments. What you can do is check against your own lists — vehicles you have banned, contractors whose passes have expired, trucks not on today's schedule. That covers most real operational needs without depending on data access you are unlikely to be granted.
How does it handle plates from other states?
Normally. Indian plate formats follow a consistent structure across states — two letters for state, two digits for district, a letter series, four digits — so a system trained on the format handles any state's plates. The variation that causes trouble is font and plate manufacture rather than state, which is why HSRP plates read better than older locally-made ones regardless of where they were registered.
What if we already have cameras at the gate?
They can sometimes be used, but usually not well. General surveillance cameras are positioned for a wide view of the gate area, whereas ANPR needs a tight, square-on view of the plate at a specific point. We assess existing feeds during the survey and occasionally one is usable, but in most cases a dedicated camera aimed at the plate position is both necessary and cheap relative to the rest of the deployment.
Is there a privacy issue with logging vehicles?
Vehicle registration numbers are personal data in the sense that they relate to an identifiable owner, so ordinary DPDP principles apply: a legitimate purpose, retention that is limited rather than indefinite, and reasonable access control on the logs. For access control and site security the purpose is clear. What we advise against is retaining years of movement data with no defined use, and sharing gate logs outside the organisation without a specific reason.
